Mercado 1.º de Maio – Barreiro
If you have not yet had the opportunity to visit the exhibition “Eating, Drinking, Cooking and Seasoning – Gastronomy in the City of Archives”, you now have another chance to do so. The exhibition will once again be open to the public at Mercado 1.º de Maio, in the heart of Barreiro, a venue that strengthens the connection between the exhibition’s theme, collective memory and the city’s identity.
This exhibition explores how the people of Barreiro have eaten, drunk, worked, resisted and socialised over time, through documentary collections and little-known stories that reveal the city’s memory and identity.
The exhibition draws connections between food and different economic activities, such as fishing, agriculture, local trade and the processing industry. It also brings back memories of Barreiro’s factories, particularly those involved in the production of soft drinks and syrups.
This initiative is promoted by Cidade dos Arquivos (City of Archives), a collaborative network dedicated to preserving and promoting Barreiro’s documentary heritage and collective memory.
