Memory Space
With visitors in mind, the Barreiro Municipal Council brought together its heritage, documentary and artistic collections in a single location — the MEMORY SPACE. Officially inaugurated on 29 June 2014, as part of the celebrations for City Day, this facility focuses on the themes of local history, identity and heritage, positioning itself as an open door to research, dissemination and the promotion of the historical and cultural aspects of the Municipality of Barreiro.
A privileged stage for exhibitions, cultural routes, guided tours and documentary research, the MEMORY SPACE fosters contact with diverse audiences. The richness of its documentary holdings justifies the regular presence of students, researchers and citizens with a general interest in local history.
With the inauguration of the permanent exhibition “Barreiro, Memory and Future” on 25 June 2015, the markedly museological dimension of this SPACE became even more accessible to all visitors. In a thematic and engaging way, the contents are offered for reading and collective exploration. Drawing on documentary, archaeological and other collections bequeathed or deposited with the Local Authority, this exhibition presents to the public the research work that the Municipality has carried out on the various sectors of activity represented here. Whether through an exercise in personal memory or through engagement with the available content, the aim is to strengthen the perception of the past and present of this City in our collective memory, and thereby project the future.
From the Documentary Archival Heritage, we highlight the oldest document on parchment, dated 1744, belonging to the Collection of the Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament, held at the Barreiro Municipal Archive.
