EPHEMERA ARCHIVE

The EPHEMERA Archive has been dedicated for many decades to the rescue, preservation and public dissemination of collections, holdings, books, manuscripts, documents, papers, pamphlets, objects, etc., both Portuguese and foreign, related to the memory of contemporary social, cultural, trade union and political history. It is an international archive with materials from around 100 countries.

The Archive holds more than 750,000 titles of books and brochures, tens of thousands of periodicals, several thousand posters, images, banners, billboards, cloths, handmade demonstration and protest signs, photographs, thousands of objects, hundreds of thousands of pamphlets, leaflets, cards, etc., thousands of badges and pins, tens of thousands of stickers — more than 6 linear kilometres of shelves and cabinets. It comprises a set of around 450 collections and holdings, unique in its scale and the importance of its funds, and is without doubt the largest private archive in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe.

We welcome researchers and research projects working with our collections and holdings, and we organise and participate in public exhibitions featuring our funds. We provide documentation and images for dozens of books and articles published in Portugal and abroad, both in print and online.

All work is carried out free of charge by volunteers.

In Barreiro, in addition to ongoing interaction with the community and with other archives, the Archive maintains two warehouses at Baía do Tejo, on Rua 48, Warehouses 3 and 5, where it concentrates much of the incoming materials it receives, as well as the work of many of its volunteers.

The Ephemera Archive has its own publishing activity, producing the Ephemera Notebooks:

The Archive, in addition to processing the collections and holdings it receives, carries out an extensive programme of public activities, including conferences and colloquia on its materials and the preservation of memory:

The organisation of exhibitions throughout the country, drawing from its wide and varied collections and holdings, is another of its activities, of which here are some examples:
